What counts as "night rate"?
Serious Brussels locksmiths apply the "night rate" between 10 PM and 7 AM. Weekends and public holidays run on a separate grid, sometimes matching the night rate. Belgian law does not cap surcharges for emergency work — hence the importance of a quote before dispatch.

The 4 classic night-rate traps
1. The fake "advertised rate"
Some sites advertise "door opening €49" 24/7. On site, the technician adds "night travel fee", "emergency surcharge", "diagnosis" — for a final €400-600. Rule of thumb: demand the full incl.-VAT price before dispatch, by SMS or WhatsApp.
2. Systematic drilling
A competent locksmith opens 90% of doors without damage. If drilling is announced upfront (€200-350 extra), get a second opinion. A slammed door can be picked or bypassed in 5-15 minutes without damage.
3. "The lock must be replaced"
After a damage-free opening, there's no reason to replace the lock. Replacement is only justified after drilling, lost/stolen keys, or after a break-in.
4. Cash-only payment
A locksmith refusing Bancontact / Payconiq / instant transfer and only accepting cash should raise suspicion. In Brussels, all serious professionals accept at least Bancontact.
