Should you replace the lock after moving? Yes — here's why

The risk nobody mentions
When you receive keys for a new home in Brussels, you typically get 2 to 4 copies. But how many spares are really out there? Former tenants, cleaners, tradespeople, estate agents, neighbours who were "let in once"… It's impossible to know how many keys exist for your lock. Replacing the cylinder brings that number back to zero.
Cylinder only or full lock?
In 90% of cases, only the cylinder needs replacing — not the whole lock. A standard European cylinder costs €30-€80 for the part, and fitting takes under 30 minutes. For a front door, choose a SKG** cylinder (€150-€280) that meets home insurance requirements.
Lost a key?
Same logic: replace the cylinder. A reversible cylinder (key works either way up) costs more but is much more convenient. We also recommend a cylinder with an ownership card — impossible to copy keys without the original card.
Costs in Brussels
- Basic cylinder replaced: €90 to €180 all-in
- SKG** cylinder fitted: €220 to €340 all-in
- Master key (3 synced doors): €380 to €600
